(1) Make red wine your summer tipple – it has just 100 calories in a small glass. Plus lab research has revealed it contains an antioxidant (called resveratrol) that helps keep the heart healthy and reduces fat cells in our body.
(2) Hang out with people who have a slender beach body. New research reveals we try to “keep up with the Joneses” when it comes to our weight. If people around us are overweight, it’s more acceptable for us to be overweight too.
(3) While you’re on holiday, burn off those lunchtime calories by going for a walk on the beach. Walking on dry sand burns more than twice as many calories as walking on concrete.
(4) Choose a bikini that flatters your shape. Hide a flabby tummy under a swimsuit, choose an underwired top to keep your boobs up and to help define your waist, and swimsuits with high legs will lengthen your pins.
(5) Take a packed lunch to work – you’ll have more control over the calories it contains.
(6) Start your dinner with a big bowl of salad with fat-free dressing. Research from Pennsylvania State University found when women ate a low calorie salad before a main course of pasta, they felt fuller and so reduced their overall calorie intake for the meal by 12 percent.
(7) Get a fake tan – it instantly helps to slim down less-than-perfect arms and legs.
(8) Brighten your complexion by eating mangoes. They’re packed with antioxidants beta-carotene and vitamin C, which help prevent free-radical damage to cells so skin is smooth and glowing. Better still, half a mango contains just 40 calories.
(9) Fill up on high-fibre foods. Constipation will give you a bloated tum, so eat more fruit and veg, and swap anything white – rice, pasta and bread – for brown stuff.
(10) Get out of breath every day – 30 minutes of aerobic exercise daily will burn fat. Try brisk walking, cycling, jogging or dancing.
(11) Don’t drink your calories – a large full-fat latte, smoothie and can of fizz totals around 500 calories. Skip these for calorie-free water every day for a week.
(12) Use sunny days to your dieting advantage. Our body has to work harder to cool down when it’s hot so it reduces our appetite to avoid coping with the extra heat produced when we eat. Turn this to your advantage by eating smaller portions.
(13) Add parsley to soups, sandwiches and salads – as well as giving you fresh breath, it can help beat fluid retention to avoid that “puffy” look.
(14) For an instant boob job, pull your shoulders back and imagine someone is pulling up on a string attached to the crown of your head. This opens up your chest, giving your boobs an instant lift.
(15) Swap meat for mushrooms in stir-fries, stews and pasta dishes. A study published in science journal Appetite found adults consumed 420 calories and 30g less fat in a day when they did this. That means nine mushroom swaps is all it takes to lose 1lb of fat.
(16) Start each morning with a quick visualisation exercise to keep you motivated to eat more healthily. Close your eyes and imagine watching a new, slimmer version of yourself on your summer holiday. Look at the way you move, what you’re wearing, how you talk to other people, the activities you do, and how much more energetic you feel. Whenever you feel like snacking, go back to this home movie in your head and the urge should pass.
(17) Ditch the salt. Too much salt can make your tum hold on to water.
(18) Think happy, summery thoughts. American and Dutch researchers have discovered that brooding on morbid thoughts such as death, makes us want to buy and eat more food.
(19) Cut caffeine by having less cola, coffee and tea. US science boffins have found that high intakes of caffeine make us hungry so we eat more. Plus, caffeine stops nutrients getting to cells, potentially increasing our risk of cellulite.
(20) Improve your posture and look half a stone lighter. Standing up straight increases the space between your ribs and hips, making your waist look slimmer.
(21) Go swimming. Whatever stroke you do, it’s great for toning your arms, back, waist and the muscles that keep your boobs looking perky.
(22) Go herbal. Peppermint and chamomile teas are great for soothing the digestive system and easing tummy troubles like excess wind. The result: you beat the bloat and get a flat tum.
(23) Start your holiday feeling rested and looking slimmer by getting some early nights. Sleep experts have found our appetites increase when we don’t get enough kip – so we eat more.
(24) Keep a food diary. You’ve heard it before but it does work. A new study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found people who kept a record of everything they ate, lost twice as much as those who kept no records.
(25) Eat your meals in front of a mirror. A study in the Journal of Consumer Research found that placing a mirror in front of us reduces the desire to overeat.
